Victim's father speaks out about school assault

Following are still shots from a video of an assault at Columbia High School that occurred on September 8, 2016. The attacker, Mykeala Rivera, 18 years old, has been charged in the unprovoked attack.  The victim's Father, Ernest Wiker first posted the video on his Facebook page along with his statements about the incident, which Columbia Spy is reprinting, with permission.

Mr. Wiker is asking concerned residents to attend the school board meeting this coming Thursday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at the District Office at 200 North Fifth Street Columbia to support justice for his daughter and call for a change in the district.

This incident is just another in a long line of concerns that highlight the need for a drastic change in how the Columbia Borough School District is being run.

Put the trouble makers out and go after the parents.
That's totally barbaric!
It's time to treat them to a STRONG DOSE OF REALITY!

Expell the GHETTO, let the parents worry about an education.
Or let them go around town and collect or steal metal for a living!

I hope by this girl being charged sends signal to other students that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Maybe have her do community service also.

Rest assured, with Tom Strickler at the helm, he will handle it. I believe not.

Does anyone remember who the school board president has been for the last 10 years as the discipline has deteriorated and the school has been in a general state of decline?

AGREE! This incident is an example of how far we have fallen. It is not the reason that we have fallen. Changes need to be made immediately and this fiasco with Elanco is another weakness that must be corrected. We do not have time for more of the same. This current school board needs to be removed and the Elanco thing needs to be trashed. We have no quality leadership.

It all starts with the staff. And by that I mean setting the example. My son's came home last week saying that the dean of students pulled all the kids wearing their Cbaa football jersey out of class. Then he spoke about how this is his town, and tells them to stop acting like a bunch of maggots, thugs and huligans. Then goes on to tell them to set the example and if they can't behave they can't wear their jersey to school. And when I called Taylor middle school to complain all I got was I will tell him not to do it again and he has lived in this town for a long time. Seriously? If teachers are not being held accountable for how they treat the kids then how do they expect the kids to do the same? Again I'm not by any means sticking up for this little punk. But the borough has no control of anything.

This district is a joke. We have the dean of students calling our kids at Taylor Middle school a bunch of maggots, thugs and huligans. And telling them that this is his town. And when us parents called or even went to complain about it all we got was well I will speak to him and let him know he can't talk to kids that way. Really? I think he needs more then talking to. Hold these teachers accountable just like you would these kids. I will go above the school district if this Dean of Students is not reprimanded!

How the district is run? How about how the culture of our entire society is run. We certainly have lost our way ethnically and morally but some will argue that is progress. God help us all.

We did not have a School Resource Officer when I went to school and I never witnessed a fight like this in a classroom. I went to Hempfield. Times have changed. Columbia district needs help and I do not look to a School Resource Officer to save it, nor do I look to Dr. Hollister for help. We need a true merger. There's so few graduates now that it makes absolutely no sense to go it alone. MERGE don't share!

This is a reflection of society as a whole. A much larger problem than the school district can solve. Keeping students safe is always a priority. Unprovoked assaults are impossible to prevent anywhere in the world. The only corrective measure is swift justice, the 18 y/o is and adult and needs locked up.

Just saw the video on Fox 43 news. It is sickening to see such behavior in our schools. Teachers can not discipline students like in the old days due to fear of retaliation from students and parents. Punishment must be administered, but fair. It not an easy solution, but all must work together.

Mayor Lutz made it clear that he gives no credence to any comment posted on "junk" sites when a name is not given.
If you do not post your name the mayor considers your comment invalid, not credible, and he does not care to address it. Imagine if the police did this when a tipster wishes to remain anonymous. If they said let's ignore that tip it's not credible because their name is withheld.

When this fight video went on facebook, there was an attempt by a higher up school district person to have it blocked or taken down. Hiding the truth does not lead to positive change.

Anonymous said...

Okay. So I'm not sure what's wrong with what the Dean said. The kids do need to stop acting like thugs!!! I'm glad that's the message he sent!

It was Strickler and he is now rewarded for this deterioration of the district with a cushy job making two times the salary of most taxpayers.

If the middle school situation is true, that Dean of students must be replaced immediately.Once a proud school district, is turning into shambles. We need leaders to take the bull by the horns clean house. We need strong discipline. Some parents may complain. If we do not correct these issues, no other district will be willing to merger, unless forced into it.Time is running out.

Joe Lintner said...

Exactly right. Just ask the mayor.

Anonymous said...

It sure sounded like the mayor was disappointed that the video was posted online.

Number one: We never would have acted like that at school... PERIOD.

Number two: We never would have acted like that at school.

Yet Lutz wheels and deals behind the scenes? ??
What a joke.

As a former borough councilperson, we were often reminded not to get involved in school board matters. It seems, Mr. Mayor, you are starting to cross the boundary.Leo,I think you are doing a good job as mayor. I know the obstacles you and council face. It is not always cut and dry as some may think. Worry about the borough government, not school matters.

But maggots!! They use that term in basic training of the military.

If you ask the mayor, he will always tell you that the mayor is always right. The all seeing , all knowing, mayor.

I have no idea how this went down with the Dean of Students but it sounds to me as if your child, along with all the other football players, were chosen for this speech because they have already shown some level of leadership and dedication by simply joining the team. If it were my child, I would be honored. There is nothing wrong with giving our leaders of tomorrow a dose of reality, trust me, if they are going through the rigors of football practice, they can handle it and i bet it will make them better citizens and leaders. Don't let our children to grow up to be snowflakes. A little tough talk once in a while will not damage your child...it will only make them better prepared for what awaits them in the real world!

We are in a position where we need outside help, in the form of an attorney or the state. The department of education needs to investigate this embarrassing school district and take it over until real corrective action can be taken and approved by the state. This school board and Elanco's so called agreement, and the Director position must go.

Anonymous said...

Yes..we need to replace him with someone who will coddle our children and give them a safe space when someone hurts their delicate feelings. Hold on....that is how we got to this point in the first place.

Anonymous said...

And above you have a major part of the problem. The kids do act like thugs and hooligans, but yet when an administrator calls them out on it, the parents complain because they think their "little darlings" are completely innocent. Wake up, people. This is why there are so many problems in the education system and society in general. The kids know they can get away with anything because their "parents" (using that term very loosely) are completely oblivious and think their child can do no wrong.

They all do. I'm losing faith fast.

Several years ago my son came home from Park school with a bloody nose. The principal brushed it off saying that eventually"size will intimidate". In other words once he grows up the other kids won't mess with him. At that time he did not fight back.

The school taxes are the biggest problem in this town. The council can't do anything to change the town without addressing the school district. With council & school board working together they could both go to the state requesting a school merger to save this town.

I remember an incident on Columbia Borough School grounds in which a girl ended up with a concussion after an attack. I thought it happened after school left out. This goes back a few years. Dr. Hollister: You're not in ELANCO anymore!

Anonymous said...

What does Avenue J have to do with CHS? You are ridiculous. Stick to the thread and stop trying to get your agenda pushed.

The doo-man is quoted in LNP article on the fight at Columbia as saying that students are only allowed to use their phones at lunch in the cafeteria...he better wake up from his duties of cafeteria supervisor to see the real world at the high school, not the world that he ,in his dreams believes to exist. Saying something doe not make it real. Facts are stubborn things....of which he will soon be made aware .
