Friends of Nick Mills gathered in remembrance at 3rd & Walnut on Friday. Mills passed away three years ago on July 29.

On Thursday morning, a component on this truck apparently broke as the truck rounded the corner at 5th & Chestnut, causing the load to list.

Traffic had to be diverted for about an hour and a half.

Patriot Towing arrived and helped right the situation - and all was well again.

Celebrating Hometown Heroes with Banners in Columbia

Banners may honor living or deceased veterans and any active-duty military personnel who have a connection to Columbia, Wallace stated. "It's for anybody with ties to Columbia. They could have lived here, worked here, been born here," he explained.

Smith said he's excited to see the project come to fruition. "Columbia has a deep history of military service, and this is long overdue as a way to honor that service," he remarked. "It's a way to honor the people who served and also to help our community understand why we have the freedom we have today."

Orders for banners may be placed by completing an application, which will be available at the Columbia VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., as well as at local fraternal organizations and a few businesses. Applications may also be found by searching for "Columbia Hometown Heroes" on Facebook, emailing ColumbiaHometownHeroes@gmail.com or calling Wallace at 717-805-1537.

Columbia will host National Night Out August 2

Glatfelter Memorial Field will be the site of family fun on Tuesday, Aug. 2, when Columbia Borough Police Department hosts National Night Out. The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the field, 1249 Lancaster Ave., Columbia.

"National Night Out is a way for us to get in touch with the community," explained Cpl. Dave Souders. "Oftentimes, the only contact we have with people is when they're having a bad moment. This is a chance to meet people at a time when they don't need help."

Columbia to be the site of cutting edge drone research testing facility

DR1 group has plans to open a facility in Columbia, Lancaster County within the next two years – anchoring a business park on land that used to be an airstrip. The organization hopes to attract like-minded technology businesses and enterprises that could collaborate in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

The Zoning Hearing Board Meeting scheduled for tonight is cancelled. The hearing is continued until August 31, 2022.

Alan Landsman appointed to Columbia Borough Council

Columbia Borough Council voted to appoint Alan Landsman to council at Tuesday night's meeting (July 26, 2022). He fills the position vacated by the resignation of Howard Stevens, which was announced at the July 5, 2022 meeting. Landsman was one of six candidates who interviewed for the position. 

Landsman, 42, has been a Columbia resident and homeowner since October 2020. He was recently appointed as chairman of the Columbia Cat Action Team (CCAT), a trap-neuter-return program for controlling feral cats in the borough.

Landsman was formerly a project manager for Sprint and later a VP of sales for a $50 million sales company. Currently, he is the regional manager for American Addiction Centers.

Councilman Peter Stahl and Eric Kaufman voted against the appointment.

A Columbia Borough Council meeting is scheduled for July 26, 2022. Shown above is a screenshot from the borough website. Citizens looking for the agenda/meeting packet will need to sort through the confusing list of updates and revisions to find information for the meeting. 

(Two weeks ago, Columbia Borough Council violated the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act by failing to post the July 12, 2022 meeting agenda on its website at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. The agenda was posted sometime between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on July 12, 2022 - about 11 hours before the meeting. In addition, an agenda was not posted at the borough office, as required by the Act.)
