Workers brave the rain to fell trees at Bethel

Workers from Doug's Tree Service spent most of the day today cutting down two trees at Mount Bethel Cemetery on Locust Street.  One tree was along Locust Street - the other on the cemetery grounds. A half-hour afternoon deluge almost put the damper on the project, but several workers muscled through the rain and succeeded in felling the trees. 



                         A few small repairs







The rain begins, with what appears to be St. Elmo's Fire emanating from the tip of the crane.

This worker was undaunted by the downpour.

Once again Columbia's boys club doing what they want. Those trees are history and no reason to cut them down. Just helping Doug's tree service make a load of money. It's the boys club helping their own out.

Thanks Lisa! My understanding is the crane cost a bundle to rent, but the cemetery received a generous donation toward the cost of tree removal. The total cost was around $4,500.

The one.tree that.was cut down had to come.down a big.part.of it had.been blown down by.the wind

To the comment about the "good old boys", maybe these trees were diseased or pose a safety threat, like rotting. I. Am sure the Mt. Bethel group carefully considered their decision before going forward. They should be given a pat on the back for the improvements they are doing at the cemetery. It is not a rich foundation and are probably watching their dollars carefully. By the way, I have NO connections to the cemetery organization. There are more important historical items in the borough to be concerned with than trees.

Drove by the cemetery, it is the best it looked in years. The service building, the freshly painted fence, and other repairs. For a group of volunteers, hats off.

I was at the Shade Tree Meeting when Mt. Bethel received approval to continue with their plan to remove street trees and replant. The large tree in the cemetery has lost several large branches over the past several years and to me posed a threat to persons on the sidewalk and also to damaging the fence and numerous grave markers. If you look at the kneeling angel marker, it had already lost a tip of the one wing and luckily did not appear to sustain additional damage from the large branch that came down in July. God bless the dedicated volunteers at Mt. Bethel for all they have done!!

That's ridiculous! Nonsense. Apparently you missed the fact that one huge limb broke off weeks ago. Luckily no one was injured this time. It's very sad when the old trees have to go. There is no hidden agenda here.

Look at the pictures posted in various places on the internet. I see no rot. Granted I understand some were I get that. But all of those...really? I am going by the pics & info posted on Facebook from the group Columbia in pics. That's why I stated what I did. Comments were made about that one person's agenda?? Seems questionable to me??

East Donegal man charged in Columbia hit & run

NATHAN WILLISON | LNP Staff Writer An East Donegal Township man is facing criminal charges after police say he struck a 13-year-old with his truck and fled the scene last month.  Derek Scott Mohr, 28, is charged with causing an accident involving death or injury without a license, failing to stop to render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and related charges.  Mohr had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado through Chestnut Street in Columbia around 8 p.m. March 20 when he struck a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter and continued driving, according to charging documents filed by police.  When police arrived, they found the boy with a broken leg and a cut to his forehead. If Mayor Lutz is going to accept praise for Columbia's successes, many of which, frankly, he had little direct involvement in, then he must also be held accountable for our failures.
