Row homes burn in Walnut Street blaze

Firefighters fought a blaze that threatened to consume several row homes on the 300 block of Walnut Street this evening. Resources were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. to find smoke streaming from the roof of 336 Walnut. Witnesses report that a dog was inside one of the attached homes where the fire began to spread but was later rescued. Five homes were damaged. Several departments were still on the scene monitoring hotspots two hours later.

Great pictures (as in informative). Our fire companies around here are great...they don't get enough recognition! Job well done men! Thanks for the update on this. I heard all kinds of sirens earlier and didn't know what was up. This site always packs more detail and I go here before I go to wgal! Job well done Cole!

As I was watching, my heart sank for a few seconds when flames burst through a second area of the roof where the firemen were standing. They are truly putting their lives at risk. At any moment they could have fallen through that roof. Thanks is great, but these guys should be paid. For now, thanks to all.

I happened to walking my dog in the area when the alarm came in and stuck around to watch for a bit. The work our volunteers do placed me a state of awe. The seemed oblivious to the danger that surrounded them and did the work that needed to be done. Amazing!. I have said this before, I would have no objections to paying a fire tax. After all the work they put in, free of charge, is it fair to ask them to then bar-b-que some chickens just to pay for the protection WE receive?

East Donegal man charged in Columbia hit & run

NATHAN WILLISON | LNP Staff Writer An East Donegal Township man is facing criminal charges after police say he struck a 13-year-old with his truck and fled the scene last month.  Derek Scott Mohr, 28, is charged with causing an accident involving death or injury without a license, failing to stop to render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and related charges.  Mohr had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado through Chestnut Street in Columbia around 8 p.m. March 20 when he struck a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter and continued driving, according to charging documents filed by police.  When police arrived, they found the boy with a broken leg and a cut to his forehead.   GUEST COMMENTARY [Name withheld by request out of fear of retaliation] For two decades, Leo Lutz has occupied the mayor's office in Columbia, and his supporters are quick to credit him with every positive development in our borough, but leadership is a two-way street. If Mayor Lutz is going to accept praise for Columbia's successes, many of which, frankly, he had little direct involvement in, then he must also be held accountable for our failures.
