Doug's Tree Service to cut River Park trees

After considering several bids, Columbia Borough Council approved the hiring of Doug's Tree Service to cut dead and dying trees at Columbia River Park at a price not to exceed $14,000. The trees slated for removal have been spray-painted with orange dots and will be cut in the near future. New trees are scheduled to be planted in the spring.

I thought trees along the river edge were not permitted to be cut down...
Don't the root system hold the banks edge? (((

According to council, Doug's Tree Service submitted the lowest of several bids.

that because they knew what the others bid was! Inside job!!

I hate to see the trees go, but they are dangerous at this point. Better to be safe.

Im glad to see that columbia is using a home town buisness!! He is good quick and provides great service!!

I find that hard to believe. The bids are sealed. Contractors normally attended the bid opening meeting and would know if their sealed bid had been opened prior to the meeting. I am sure we would have heard something from a contractor if their bid had been improperly opened before the meeting.

When did they open the bids up? Nobodies knows!

$2,000.00 a tree!!!! I will cut them down for 7!!!

How many bids did the borough receive for painting the building? I heard one! Was it advertised? How would a contractor know if their bid was improperly opened? Don't kid yourself.

A contractor would know his bid was improperly opened at the bid opening meeting if the envelope he sealed and signed was tampered with. Very easy. As for the opening, those bidding would know when the opening meeting is scheduled, it would be part of the bid proposal packet. To suggest someone in the Borough is tampering with sealed bids is a very strong accusation. While I am sure it happens, I would find it hard to believe that someone in our little town would place them self in a position where they could be criminally charged and jailed over a small tree removal bid.

seriously people. get a grip. how dare you make accusations that are unfounded, unproven and how dare you slam ANY local business in this Boro. get off your high horse, come out of the hole you live in and DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE. it's people LIKE YOU who give Columbia a bad name. Get a life or shut up.

yay!!!! i agree. just because someone works hard to support their family and this town gives YOU NO right to be an ass. It's a real shame that the hundreds or thousands of tenants don't stay on the bus in Lancaster and STOP coming into the Boro and collecting welfare, food stamps, free insurance, etc. we have families in the Boro who TRULY need these services and who have lived here and worked here for years only to have serious health issues, etc now.

This town is in horrible shape & will be until we consolidate our police dept. & school district with a surrounding neighbor. I am tired of reading Mr Gainers unintelligent responses though in this blog. It's OK to vent on here, that's what the blog is for, just show us that you have more intelligence than the renters you describe on here all the time.
