Council extends contract of Market House Trust

Columbia Borough Council voted tonight to extend its contract with the Columbia Historic Market House Trust by one year. The contract, which had been set to expire at the end of this year, will now run until December 31, 2016.

If the contract of the Market House Trust is to expire December 31, 2015. There should have been a bidding process for the management of the Market House by other interested organizations. Is this business 101 for Columbia Borough? This is why Columbia will never take the leap of success, like it is afraid of success may be too much..

The Trust is such a bizarre group. One member (or affiliate), stood before council and stated that she expected council to support the market by attending it. What strikes me as terribly odd about that statement is that I rarely, if ever, see the members of the Trust around town or at functions. In fact, the one lady, I have never seen and have no idea what her connection to Columbia is. They so passionately beg to have this position that I have to wonder what they stand to gain. After all, this is a volunteer position, one would think they would just throw in the towel by this time. At this rate the bypass project will be finished before the market ever gets back on it's feet. The Trust has to be made up of visible members. At the very least, appoint new people. For this group, it's too little, too late.

The Trust doesn't use one penny of tax payers money. All volunteers. Money collected in rent pays for expenses.

Council REMOVE the TRUST immediately. this is irresponsible, ignorant, arrogant, ridiculous, insane, unacceptable. the Boro can NOT prosper with the trust in charge for another year after the next 4 months. UNDO the motion. You council persons are unbelieveable. ignorant. incompetant.

Cole, is it possible for you to attend the meetings of the Trust? Perhaps we could get more transparency.
The public has a right to know their plans for the Market and what steps are being taken to accomplish their goals.

The Market House Trust was supposed to bring commerce, manage the building and vendors in accordance. These were not accomplished in the (5) year term contract that was signed. Kudos to Councilors Weiser and Buery for seeing change and not taking the back door politics that happen in Columbia. Remember your vote in November is crucial for change.

You who seem to know all do you wanna volunteer your time to run the markethouse? Council cannot take this on yet. Better yet go to a council meeting listen, learn and speak if you have a better idea. Last nite was my first meeting. I may not agree with everything. Everyone in town must help if you want things to change for the better. It takes more then a handful of council members to make a town. Perhaps you should practice what you preach my running for council. By the way I'm just a resident not affiliated with the Trust or council as I know you will want to try and mouth me back.

People need to stop listening to the rumor and misleading information/statements from those who just make up or misconstrued thing cause they are piss'd that they didn't stand up and take the reins of power and get market back up & running. Like that would happen! . Also, have a vendetta against certain people in positions on Council and Trust. Most of the mouths out there couldn't take what they dish out

Just shut it down completely so the Borough can use it as storage and maintenance shops or sell it of to some to develop it into something like a restaurant with wine cellar or a artist group so they can open a gallery or a antique co-op or even a Fire Museum...
Doing this will stop all the b.s. and wasted energy so efforts, ideas and energies can be put to getting the town on its feet...

awesome ideas for Market House. Do you know that when they did the craft show in the Market House at Halloween for 3 or 4 days....that it drew THOUSANDS, YES THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. DO IT AGAIN. stop wasting the beaiutiful market and all that space with NOTHING. trust gotta go. incompetent.

i agree 100%. Council needs to go too. Not one of them has the majority of Columbians interests at heart. this is one of the WORSE councils that i can remember. they DO NOTHING. SAY NOTHING. talk out their as---. have absolutely NO clue. they certainly are NOT representing the folks that voted for them. that's 100% accurate. imbeciles. majority of councilors just sit like a bump on a log and say nothing because they don't have any clue as to whats going on. and IF they do speak, its to each other when someone else is talking.

East Donegal man charged in Columbia hit & run

NATHAN WILLISON | LNP Staff Writer An East Donegal Township man is facing criminal charges after police say he struck a 13-year-old with his truck and fled the scene last month.  Derek Scott Mohr, 28, is charged with causing an accident involving death or injury without a license, failing to stop to render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and related charges.  Mohr had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado through Chestnut Street in Columbia around 8 p.m. March 20 when he struck a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter and continued driving, according to charging documents filed by police.  When police arrived, they found the boy with a broken leg and a cut to his forehead. His scooter was lying nearby, its handlebars completely snapped off.  Another teenager who witnessed what happened described the truck to police and said that the driver made no attempt to stop after striking the boy. If Mayor Lutz is going to accept praise for Columbia's successes, many of which, frankly, he had little direct involvement in, then he must also be held accountable for our failures.
