St. Paul's Lutheran Church held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Locust Street Park this morning. Pastor Skip Nizinski led the 15th anniversary service, which was attended by about 50 people from the community.

Columbia Police give info on shooting
From a press release provided by the Columbia Borough Police Department:
On 9-11-16 at approximately 0303 hours, Columbia Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Locust Street in Columbia for a report of shots being fired. Upon arrival, responding officers learned that a large fight occurred in the area involving patrons of the Venues nightclub, which is located at 237 Locust Street. Witnesses reported multiple shots being fired. Officers from multiple jurisdictions responded to assist. No shooting victims were located at the scene.
As Police were conducting their investigation, information was obtained that two shooting victims were being treated at area hospitals for gunshot wounds suffered as the result of the fight that occurred in the 200 block of Locust Street in Columbia. The shooting victims are receiving treatment at this time. No information concerning their respective identities or conditions will be released at this time.

Police investigation on 200 block of Locust this morning
At least half a dozen police departments responded to an incident on the 200 block of Locust Street at about 3 a.m. today. Officers scrutinized the exterior of surrounding buildings and sidewalks and set up yellow numbered incident markers in the street in front of the Columbia Water Company building. What appeared to be a baseball cap was observed lying in the street near the markers.
A resident of Third and Locust Streets told the Spy that he heard five to six "pops" this morning sometime between two and three o'clock. He also reported hearing a group of women shouting around that time. An officer informed the Spy that a shooting occurred.
Fire police detoured traffic away from the entire block, which was lined with police tape. Police also established an inner perimeter near the center of the block.
More information will follow as it becomes available.

School safety line repainting not in the budget
The lines have faded. At the top of the quarter-mile long hill to Columbia Jr/Sr High School, painted lines and arrows designating pedestrian crossings and traffic flow are now barely visible. Fran Resch, former crossing guard and former school board member, made three requests to school officials to have the lines repainted - once at the beginning of the last school year, and twice at recent school board meetings (including Thursday night's committee of the whole meeting). He is concerned about the safety of students who need to cross the road several times a day when vehicles are traveling up the hill. So far, his requests have been ignored. According to Resch, he was told that line painting couldn't be worked into the budget.
