Despite birders' protests, feds approve plan to raise water level behind Safe Harbor Dam
"It looks like big money will trump the welfare of the shorebirds. The effort to protect the Conejohela Flats started back around 1998, and after 17 years, this is how it ends."
Birders today along Route 441 at the culvert near Blue Lane . . .

If Columbia wants to capitalize on the river and all it has to offer, why would anyone sit back and accept this? Bird watching, kayaking, hiking, etc. all of which bring good people to Columbia. Birds are thriving in our area, we cannot afford to damage all the efforts that were made for so many years. Where's Hickernell now? Help!!!
Risk getting hit by a train to watch birds. Maybe Norfolk Southern Police should patrol this area and cite for trespassing. I guess they did not see the 64 signs posting their property...
I'm certain that these people are totally cautious compared to the kids seen in a prior post on this very site. Those kids were touching a moving train, no sense in their heads. Where were the Norfolk "police" then? Or for that matter the borough police. With all the land Norfolk owns along our beautiful public river bank one would think if they are so worried about public safety, they could construct a bird watching area. The migratory stop over is not visible from the river park and the motor boats scare the birds away. Between Safe Harbor and Norfolk we will not have public access or protection for nature. They will continue to encroach and the obedient tax paying people will continue to allow it.
If memory serves me correctly, there was a girl walking on the tracks with earbuds in (also pictured some time ago on this site). But let some middle-aged people look at birds and hell breaks loose!
I questioned the owner of this site, if in fact whoever took the pics of the kids touching the train, notified police themselves?I haven't heard a reply yet?? I would hope that rather than just posting pics, the photographer would also be proactive and report such dangerous situations and help the police by furnishing the pics so that they may try and track down the children.
I have heard from reliable sources that a few local police officers actually look at this website. If that is the case, they saw the photos of the kids at the moving train. If they want to find them they can certainly try.
When they built that dam they got funding to create "water steps" for the fish like the salmon that at one time were residents of the river but someone got greedy or forgetful maybe even both. It's not like what the people want or say matters any way it's only the lucky and chosen few who get to make those rules and decisions the rest are nothing more than little fish only the big shots and wigs decide for the rest of you. You like that Americans paying their salary (taxes) while having no say?

I'm a blogger, not a babysitter.
