The State Dog Wardens and the Columbia Borough Police will   be conducting compliance checks during the Month of April.   Officers will canvass homes to ensure that dogs have a current license and rabies vaccination. The Police as well as the State Dept. of Agriculture    remind dog owners that a license is one of the best ways to ensure a lost dog is returned home safely.    Under PA law, all dogs three months or older must be licensed by January 1 of each year.  Violators can be cited with a maximum fine of $300 per violation plus court costs. A local resident points to the regulations for Locust Street Park to remind police to patrol and enforce. Warmer weather is on tap for this coming week, which will encourage people to congregate in the park, and last year saw a lot of vandalism there. At its November 10, 2014  meeting, Columbia Borough Council voted unanimously to give police enforcement powers in the park.

A Cooper's Hawk on Barber Street this afternoon . . . 

Emergency personnel and water company employees responded to the scene of an accident along Route 441 where a vehicle had sheared off a fire hydrant this afternoon. It took over three hours for crews to clear the scene and attend to the damaged hydrant. The accident scene was near a residence across from Sam Logan's bait shop.  Fire police shut down Route 441 between Plane and Mill Streets.  As seen from the intersection of Route 441 and Mill Street.  This helpful fellow radioed Columbia Fire Police Captain Mike Rhodes at our request to see if we could access the scene, but the captain replied in the negative, because "There's nothing to see." California Borough in Washington County, PA has a new manager in town, and he has some ambitious plans for economic development and recreation. Samuel Sulkosky, 52, originally from Indiana County, was tapped to fulfill the roles as manager, secretary and treasurer. Borough road crews were cleaning streets today.  Salt, trash, and other debris have accumulated after a long and trying winter. At last night's borough council meeting of the whole, Borough Manager Ron Miller said that 300 tons of "anti-skid" was applied to the town's roads this season, and that it will take a few weeks to remove it all.  He asked residents to bear with crews as they work to tidy things up.

An accident involving two vehicles occurred today on Route 462 near the entrance to the Columbia Plaza.

Installation continued today on the cell tower at 1020 Blunston Street . . .   Note the two workmen pictured above. It's a heckuva climb, but someone's gotta do it.

Installation of the Verizon cell tower is underway at 1020 Blunston Street.  Revenue from the tower will be used to fund various borough projects.
