really? theres a lot of things wrong here. FIRST u don't decide which school ur children attend, it should first go by location, next childs needs. and like the school board didn't know there was going to be an issue? after spending TOO MANY MILLIONS on the high school. here's a fix-figure out how to make it work. CREATE A TAX (SCHOOL USE) FOR ALL TENANTS, RENTERS IN THIS BORO....THERE ARE MORE RENTERS THAN HOMEOWNERS. THEY PAY NOTHING..NO TAXES..SOME NO RENT, ETC. MAKE IT A SET FEE DUE ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR SAY $500 OR $750 OR DEPENDING ON HOW MANY CHILDREN IN OUR SCHOOLS, ADD $$ FOR EACH ONE.....this is a huge problem...these transients come into the boro, do nothing, pay nothing and crowd OUR schools, our taxes go up AGAIN and they pay NOTHING....IS THAT FAIR?????? more later

the renters themselves pay no school tax directly, but the landlords do pay school tax (and all other kinds of taxes) on the property...

People are given too many choices in some instances. This is one of them.

i agree with the post about having renters pay school taxes to help pay for all thier children attending our schools and the HOMEOWNERS FOOTING THE BILL!!!!! hello, wake up. this is a serious issue. someone (school districit) should give us a count of the renters/tenants choldren - the numbers!!!! it's probly a lot more than us homeowners who do pay our way./

I personally see nothing wrong with dividing the schools and have some grades all go to one school and other grades to another school. This whole "judging" that Park School is no good is simply unjust! My child attends there and is an excellent student. They all end up together at the high school regardless of which elementary school they attend. At least this way, they all go through the early years together.

How can Columbia schools be overcrowded? Columbia is land-locked and cannot expand. If it is overcrowded, it is because of the rental units (ie: Wagon Werks). I want to know how many students are in the graduating class now compared to 10 years ago. When my mother graduated, there were about 80 students, when my children graduated it was nearly identical in numbers, so how can this be overcrowding? Many of the older homes are now divided into multiple units for renters. I love this town, but it is a mess right now.

Do renters pay the head tax?

Good points

Rental property owners pay property tax, but they should have to pay additional taxes when they subdivide a property and rent out the units.

Very good points. A tenant/renter tax has merit.

renters need to pay a school tax - they send their children to our schools and the elderly who have no children have to pay for them...plus all homeowners...landlords do pay property taxes BUT the tenants NEED to pay....too..to the school....to help offset the costs of educating the transients children

idk...maybe the time has come to combine schools with another district. this ain't working

I get a kick out of the "uptown" people not wanting their children to go to Park School. Look around folks, we ALL live in Columbia.

Do you think when those "uptown" people are traveling out of Columbia and are asked by someone where they live that they reply with "uptown Columbia"? Just wondering....

Joe Lintner said...

No. There's no uptown Columbia, just Columbia.

that's exactly right. and Columbia homeowners and taxpayers can NOT afford this crazy ass shit. i swear none of these people have brains. can't they see the numbers of peoples losing their homes, their jobs, their dignity, etc. families are moving back in together-like back inthe day-where you may have 3 generations of people living together.

yeah i agree. don't know the answer tho. have no idea just what it will take to WAKE THESE PEOPLE UP - COUNCILPERSONS AND SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.........they are living in their OWN little world
