This is very sad for Columbia. This is worthwhile and the council people should try to get them to stay. How will the elderly get their groceries? I see many of them walking there. Do something good for our town.
I think the tax increase does not help it is going to drive business out of town just think about the older people in town that don't drive that will really be hard on them thank you Mussers for you being here all these years for the people of Columbia
as an older person who has shopped at this store for many many years I am disgusted by this .they are only losing business because they kept taking things out because they had it at their other store. all the people in this part of town shop here and many of them are elderly or infirm and walk from trinity house or otherwise walk to the store. and the other thing about this is that since mussers' owns the parking lot do you think they will rent this space to another grocery store?? I think not. there has always been a grocery store here ever since they opened up the shopping center. I guess not getting a alcohol license really pissed them off!
Citizens of Columbia, do not treat this lightly, as this has the potential to literally derail any progress made in revamping your downtown/business district situation. Mr Umber, for an interesting comparison, with camera in hand, drive the 44 miles east to the City of Coatesville; notice the architecture, similar "Victorian era - wealth" constructed Coatesville, too. Visit Coatesville's "Raytik's Barber Shop" on any Friday, Strode Avenue, and Madison Street, and ask them how long after the City lost Acme Market's, (pronounced "Ak uhh mee") the last 'real' supermarket - to close shop, for the city to literally die. Look to their revitalization attempts (have torn down almost 30% of "classic Main Street"), as an indication of what NOT to do. PLEASE TAKE PLENTY OF PHOTOS, AND COMPARE WITH YOUR "STILL" VIABLE COLUMBIA! I sincerely pray this helps!!
Grocery stores have razor thin profit margins. Selling alcohol is about the only way for them to stay open. It's a business, after all. They can't make it with a few people buying a few things.
There's several grocery delivery services. But hey, this is Columbia - maybe the borough will buy the grocery store and run it. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. They think they can do everything else.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Musser's owns the plaza, still taxed the same if they wern't there as a grocery store. Second yes it is sad to lose this, I shop there and I feel for the people who walk to there and the elderly. Not making the money they want and must have someone else to put in there the way I read it. Even if it was half the size of basic needs would be great. Maybe Murphy's can open a small store there plenty of Taxpayers loan program to do it.
No we're spending our money on a river park and parking garage for a hotel. Who cares if the elderly can get to the grocery store. Get a shuttle to take them there Weis is the closest. They will probably do a booming business now.
This sounds so familiar. Just like when Hinkle's announced they were closing. Many people claimed this would be the death of the town. Then Murphys bought Hinkle's and was treated like a savior. Look how they are being treated now. Just read the comments.
Mr. Umber, if you are going to drive to Coatesville to take pictures, go another 22 miles northeast to Phoenixville. 20 years ago their downtown area was pretty bad. It's booming today.
ok-now that Musser's has closed the store it seems they no longer think it is necessary to light the parking lot. this is a very dangerous situation. they spent money in the past few months to install newer led lights that are small and bright and really worked well to keep things lit but in the past week since they closed these lights are all off. the lot is dark even when the other stores are open. there have been broken store windows in the past and I can only imagine what could happen now that it is dark as midnight overnight and you cant see anything. what is going on here? they have the tobacco shop here that is still open and they are responsible as owners to make sure the lot is safe and secure for the customers who shop at the other stores here. are they really planning to keep the lights off for good? I know there were problems in the past when daylight savings time set the timer off until it was reset but these lights have been off some a few nights in a row now. this is a very scary situation.

Think of how much tax increase the Musser property has gotten with a 21% increase , I bet this was part of the thinking to close.

look at turkey hill at prospect road , it is 1/3 beer , they must be making money to have that much floor space for beer.
