The Columbia Market House held a birthday block party on Sunday, featuring activities, free hot dogs, and gaming characters. Part of the first block of South 3rd Street was closed off for the celebration.
The event was sponsored by Musser's Market from Shoppes at Prospect Road, Berks Hot Dogs, Kat's Sweet Shop, KiLoke, and Windy Lindy's Old Pretzel Haus. CHI St. Joseph Children's Health Dental Center and your Healthy Columbia Initiative were also part of the celebration.
The Market House's last day of operation will be December 17, 2017, after which it will undergo renovations and reopen as a space for community events.
Fenris and Zelda were joined by (l-r) Kyler, Diablo, and Shay Carmac.

So the coffee club finally got their way. Close the market and make it a venue for what, Victorian balls? What a joke
Another loss for Columbia.
This is a great idea ! Bring back the old Columbia Christmas show. Coin Shows, Antique Road Shows, Art Shows, Gun Shows, Cooking Shows, Beer Festivals, Magic Shows, etc.!, like a mini convention center ! The best thing about shows like this is that each show brings a new crowd from their own following - a nice of mix of people some of whom will come back to town once the discover Columbia !, rather then the same customers over and over. This is definitely a step in the right direction for the downtown development. We just need a parking garage to go with.
I don't know who wrote the last comment but I am almost sure it was someone from the coffee club it is a market house not a convention center does the town really need a convention center no we just want the market house to be used for a market the way it was years ago
Once again, who is going to pay for the up grade??
Sounds nice, but we know what will happen. It will be a dedicated place for a select few people for a select few events.
Sounds like a good idea, but it comes down to marketing the building. The council must do a better job it.
Nothing is the way it was years ago - wake up and smell the roses !!
"Space for community events?" I was told in the Spring of 2011 that a major expansion of the building at 445 Linden Street was in the works and builders were already submitting proposals for this expansion, which would also have been "space for community events." Famous last words ...
So the town has no farmers market now ?, that's just great - we're in the heart of the farm land with a community that stays in town to shop and no farmers market - go figure
Columbia Borough Council could we please see plans before you spend our tax dollars! These back door deals need to have transparency before they show up on a Council Agenda for a vote.
While I would love to see the market house used as a market house the way it was years ago, I believe that it just a pipe dream. The demographics in the town have drastically changed. That, along with how people shop to day, makes it almost, if not completely, impossible to make it a flourishing farmers market as it was back in the day.
Totally incorrect. A good managed farmers market that has demographics such as Columbia, Marietta, Maytown, Mountville, and other small towns across the river is feasible.
With a good management team (unlike the "Trust") with NO interruptions by the Borough Council like Renae Sears had to endure during her tenure can be done. With over 300,000 visitors per year coming in town for our local attractions, food and produce, it's not rocket science.
So if you think demographics the problem, then you are not business minded. Are businesses like Burning Bridge, Hinkle's, Kettle Works, Stover's and Taco To Go hurting due to demographics. No!
Give me a break
Don't hold your breath.
Comparing those businesses to a farmers market is ridiculous. Other than burning bridge i doubt many people from out if town are flocking to them..they are mostly frequented by locals.
They are considered as separate businesses inside the market. So you are saying Hinkle's and Kettle Works have no out of town business?
