Like Adamstown, New Oxford and Hanover, Columbia has a thriving antiques community. For locals and out-of-towners alike, it's become a destination for people looking for old furniture, knick-knacks, memorabilia and other items with a bit of history.

I'm glad that this is happening for Columbia. Capitalize on the history, the river, and use the old buildings to sell treasures from the past. The drawback is all the rental units and declining property value. It's way to late to get rid of the rental units, they are here to stay.

People looking for cheap items. Think they'll spend much on anything else.
This is deffinitely not the kind of business towns who are trying to revive their commercial presence push for.

What about that property adjacent to the tattoo parlor and park. It's been for rent/sale for quite some time. Now it's nothing but an eyesore. Could the borough purchase it and then raze it? The area would be better used as an extension of the park. After all, it sits along 462 a very highly traveled area, with people passing through Columbia. Why not make it appealing.

18 Lancaster Avenue is the property you are talking about... The old service station/ garage.
It's an I eyesore alright... Ashame... I looked at it to open a food biz but it needs too much work for the price he is asking... Could be a awesome building. Borough needs to get on the owner who lives in Wrightsville to clean up the place and make repairs... There are permits in window but nothing is being done... Grrr...

How much tax breaks do these people get when opening up a new business? This is what people should look into. I bet its alot, and thats why they come here.

East Donegal man charged in Columbia hit & run

NATHAN WILLISON | LNP Staff Writer An East Donegal Township man is facing criminal charges after police say he struck a 13-year-old with his truck and fled the scene last month.  Derek Scott Mohr, 28, is charged with causing an accident involving death or injury without a license, failing to stop to render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and related charges.  Mohr had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado through Chestnut Street in Columbia around 8 p.m. March 20 when he struck a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter and continued driving, according to charging documents filed by police.  When police arrived, they found the boy with a broken leg and a cut to his forehead. His scooter was lying nearby, its handlebars completely snapped off.  Another teenager who witnessed what happened described the truck to police and said that the driver made no attempt to stop after striking the boy.   GUEST COMMENTARY [Name withheld by request out of fear of retaliation] For two decades, Leo Lutz has occupied the mayor's office in Columbia, and his supporters are quick to credit him with every positive development in our borough, but leadership is a two-way street. If Mayor Lutz is going to accept praise for Columbia's successes, many of which, frankly, he had little direct involvement in, then he must also be held accountable for our failures. The facts paint a troubling picture. Despite the mayor's repeated assurances that our streets are safe, we've witnessed a disturbing rise in assaults, shootings, and vandalism.
