About Town

This week's photos from around Columbia:

Clowning at Tacos to Go

Skullduggery, too

And here's an emaciated devil dog.

Alas, poor Yorick!

Never dance with a creepy clown in the pale moonlight.

This is what happens when you smoke that devil drug - marijuana.

Even this Jack O'Lantern is fully lit.

Looks like someone wanted to park - sign be damned.

 Multi-unit birdhouse -
Well, at least one apartment building got built in town.
(North 4th)

 Glinda the Good Witch?
(North 4th)

Abandoned skull in Avenue G

 Permit for a retail pharmacy?

 Apparently, this is for sale.
(South 4th Street)

 Sticker shock
(North 3rd)

Gallery on 4th - now with more gourds

 Magical Mystery Tour?
(South 3rd)

Digging things up at Columbia Crossing

 A trench, in fact

A former councilman called the building, "The gift that'll keep on taking."

 Many-gloried street signs glorified

When Lowe's is all out of stockade fence

An alternative to those outrageous Comcast bills

At the gazebo in Locust Street Park

 And there it is.

Meanwhile, on South 2nd - painted flags - literally on South 2nd

Must be some sort of revisionist history - two original colonies and no states?!

And here, complete with sticker, is a cardinal-shaped birdhouse, big enough to terrify any bird in sight.

 Shadow company?

 Getting their "S" in gear

That's small change these days (but nonetheless acceptable)

 Alligatoring in Avenue E

That's strange - This sidewalk on Poplar Street ends here, skips over two front yards, then continues further up the street.

And here it just kind of . . ends.

On the other side of the street it ends but continues at the last house in the block - at the intersection of 5th and Poplar. So, if you walk over the front of someone's lawn to avoid walking in the street, can you be cited for trespassing?

Three flats; therefore, it's in E-flat major

But can you live on a hedge that lives in a hedge?

Let's hope he plugged the meter . . . because - see next photo.

There's the reason.

Too bad he didn't nail this one.

 Holy smoke?

 Clean it up!

 Pumpkin tree
(Manor Street)

Tree down on the unpaved section of Heritage Drive, most likely due to last night's horrific winds

 Work in progress

 Artist at work

Another work in progress

Still another work in progress

Yet another work in progress

And a few submitted photos . . .

Street sweeper barely bypassing that nasty, unattended ditch on the 300 block of South 2nd

There it is - naked in the daylight.

And finally - the former Embassy Hotel - apparently after a fire

On the matter of criminal trespass on Poplar, OK, Had person come on my property opened my front door, put one foot in my house, he saw my wife, left, she called me, I called the police and ran home. Officer asked me if my wife feared threatened , I said she was really upset, he said nothing we can do about it, I said so I can just walk up to anyone's house and just open their door, he said yep.

Thank god! An alternative to CVS. Excited to see a new pharmacy coming downtown. Murphys are turning this town around

yep too much money being spent on the river park. What about the rest of the town. I'm sure 10,000 people don't go down there. Columbia people I mean we are using our money for that place.

WASTE OF TAX PAYERS MONEY OUT AND OUT WHO APPROVES THIS BULLSH__??

Stop the bleeding .

People look at these pics , the pit is ENOUGH , the rest of the town looks like hell but these people keep poring money into the pit, for what to get there name on a plaque at the rest of the towns expence? No wonder there is No pride in this town any more the council and mayor lost touch with the tax payers , 99% of the tax payers don't want there taxes used at this pit , but the people we elected keep throwing our money away. Put the money to use in the town , NOT THE MONEY PIT!!!

How much back taxes are owed by Cimarron , and how can they move on with the debt with the borough?

Borough manager Denlinger , we all know you read this , can you tell the tax payers what your plan is , the monies going to the river park are nutz, please fix up the town, did you ever look around , you want people to take pride like it used to be, start putting money in to the town , use the men to clean and repair the things that are in the town not at money pit that the tax payers pay s/h $115,000 a year to manage , no wonder people have no pride or trust in the council , mayor , and your self! How does Columbia have a council member on council voting when they owe taxes from years ago and thinks it is funny when they are ask about it? Mayor Lutz lets his neighbor excavate with no permit, and a house away from a zoning officers house? The codes guys are fining people for thing that were never a problem before, WITH NO WARNINGS, please tell us what your plans are because we all can,t come to the meeting and the council doesn't listen any way. Thank you transparent borough will move forward better than this back door way it has been for a few years now.

Borough Council IS who made the decision to STOP giving warnings from the Code Dept. THEY wanted instant tickets!!! go to council mtg

Graffiti all over town and now in the streets? Arrest them. No respect for the flag or the town.

Why they are like the gods of Columbia or so they think.

Council meetings are a joke , they know how they are going to vote from there Closed (BACK) door session right before the meeting they vote at. It is still selective enforcement , and a few get there way, so there you go and there goes any pride or trust in the town. A new manager could help if they stood up like Norm did , but alas we have a group that thinks it is there way or no way , do as they say not as they do, it makes Columbia a laughing stock and people read and laugh at the council , mayor , employees, and the borough ingeneral. WELCOME TO COLUMBIA.

Borough council also made the decision to lose 151,000 dollars on 208 210 locust st.

Anonymous said...

That's funny. They are the only ones doing anything in this town and last time I looked their taxes are paid.

Well Stated - This Situation is Getting Worse

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't Columbia require a "construction surety bond" prior to demolition ? It's a simple legal tool that more sophisticated communities use to avoid broken promises. Taxpayers should demand this. This historic building at the bottom of Locust is now gone, and so is the tax revenue, at least for now ! Columbia Borough could have avoided this loss this with a simple legal tool called a "construction surety bond" , prior to Demolition.

They did now use it to fill the hole, common sence.

Anonymous said...

Yup we should send the pic of the hole to the Lancaster news paper and let them ask the mayor for comment. This hole is 3 or more years old , but look what gets done at the river park. A comment would be at least entertainment for the area.

Maybe the borough is to busy with the river park to do any thing in town that's way they are fining people to make it look better.

Borough Council surely does some stupid things - we ALL do. Does anybody consider even the condition of most streets in Columbia compared to many other municipalities in Lancaster County? I get around, and Columbia's are among the best for the most part. I agree that the quick tickets by the zoning department Gestapo are a borderline-criminal fiasco. Maybe if certain homeowners and property owners would get off their butts and clean up around their places, civic pride would also be restored. Evict tenants who are hogs. Governments of any level are NOT the answer to many of our problems. RESPECT would go a long way though.

Concerning the sidewalks on Poplar st... As far as I know, residents were given the choice if they wanted one put in when the house was built. Wasn't required back then...

Anonymous said...

WRONG better look again.

Anonymous said...

Council shore is spending , lites on 462, yup we really need them.

Anonymous said...

Ok if the codes gives a ticket on flacking paint , how long does a person have to finish the job?

Anonymous said...

30 days I think.

Anonymous said...

Is it socially acceptable to give one person a notice with a list of violations, when houses across the street have the same violations with no notices given ?

DISCRIMINATION!

Anonymous said...

Columbia has to stop this selective enforcement, it has to practice what it says, for everyone not just some. They are setting themselves up for a class action suit , I for one am ready to sign on , and I am shore there are many more of you too.

We all have to get a attorny and go after the borough and the council personaly , it went to far, lets get them , it has to be everyone or none!
