A look back at last Sunday's baptism

Last Sunday, August 11, congregants from the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ gathered at Columbia River Park for a mass baptism.  About 50 people were baptized at the ceremony.

At 3:15, the ceremony was about to begin, but the man on the left wanted to back his boat trailer down the ramp to load his jet ski.  Cool heads prevailed and he was permitted to do so, even though the event had been posted a day or two in advance, with notices clearly stating a start time of 3 o'clock.

Safety cones were removed as another boater decided he needed to use the boat ramp, too.

Soon, the faithful lined up along the ramp.

 Good will was abundant.

Congregants descended to the river.

Many watched the proceedings as the ceremony began.

Others watched from the top of the ramp.

Children waited as the baptisms commenced.

 Baptismal candidates entered the water.

The woman on the left had just been baptized.

Nine-year-old Imari Emerson waited, as Reverend Darnell Bowman, left, and church elder, Ismael Garcia, prepared to baptize her.

 Waiting . . .

Done!

Hooray!

And finally, the collection basket.

Taser the Bloodhound on the trail at Columbia's National Night Out

Owner Robert Hetter attaches a harness to Taser the bloodhound at the start of a tracking demo.

After allowing Taser to smell an article of clothing of a "missing girl," they're off and running.

Within a minute or so, Taser has found the "missing girl."  His reward is a can of cat food.
Yes, cat food!  That's not a misprint.

Another river rescue

Several rescue units responded to an incident Sunday morning involving a kayaker who went missing for a brief time on the Susquehanna River near Columbia River Park.  He and his wife had been in their kayaks when he became separated from her.  He was later found downriver by rescue personnel, offshore from Manor Township.  He and his wife were reunited on shore at River Park after he was rescued.

Fortunately, this story had a happy ending.

What did I hear/see?

Yesterday morning, right after 11 o'clock, it sounded like several large planes thundered over my house, heading south. The house shook. By the time I got to the window, all I could see was a plane in the distance, trailing exhaust, as it flew low over the Susquehanna. I don't think it was an airliner. I wonder if it was a C-130 on its way to Dover Air Force Base, in response to the latest terrorism alert.
