The purpose of the new bypass is to divert truck traffic around Columbia and keep it out of the center of town. Once the road is finally opened, however, some truckers might have a hard time of it, especially in winter weather. Those traveling east on Route 30 will need to get off at the Columbia exit as a first step in connecting with Route 441 South. From there, the driver will follow a convoluted route by turning right onto Linden Street, then right again onto North Third (near the Turkey Hill Experience), then up the hill to the Route 30/441 intersection, then left onto the new bypass, following it to the lower part of Bridge Street, and then onto Front Street. Since there is currently a No Turn on Red sign at the Third and Linden intersection, traffic is likely to back up on Linden, from Third Street to the exit ramp. If that's the case, then the plan to keep trucks out of town might be trading one problem for another.
Whatever the case, it is imperative that tractor-trailers be prevented from using the Third and Locust Street intersection, which was never intended for such large vehicles, as evidenced in these recent photos:

I heard it could open tomorrow but will believe it when I see it.
If it opens with that ADA like it is now, there will be some problems or maybe no one will use the ADA and just cross like they always did.
How long will it take until the truckers catch on to this new route and will they be cited if they drive through town?
It doesn't seem as if this project was totally thought out.
Time to open
I don't see any change in the congestion that already exists at Third and Linden Streets. Currently, trucks have to make a left turn at the intersection. Now they will have to make a right turn. Don't see much of a difference.
Waste of BIG time money!!
Are people ever happy with anything? I just see people who like to complain regardless of what is done.
it's going to be awesome when it gets all figured out. may have to tweak it...huge back up at 3rd & Linden Sts. will have to do something with the lights, etc. and the light up on Chickies HIll. Hopefully it will all work out. it will be amazing to have the trucks out of the downtown!
Yes, it is great to have the trucks out. No argument there, in fact yes, people are happy. Asking an obvious question about a situation should not be interpreted as dissatisfaction. Issues must be worked out and why not encourage input. No need to think every question is a negative reflection on the project.
I cannot understand why some people continue think this was a huge was of money. The new road will get the heavy trucks out of town. These trucks are playing havoc with the foundations of houses, underground water and sewer lines, are noisy and at times, dangerous. I for one believe this was a good use of tax payer dollar!
Authoritarianism. Do not question any part of this project or you will be considered unhappy with it and negative. If "they" had all the answers to this project, the road would have already been open.
This will be a great thing for Columbia once they get it all figured out. I bought my house on Third Street 6 years ago with high hopes of the project starting back then. It took a little longer than I was hoping to get done but the end is in sight. There's going to be some issues at first but they'll get it figured out. Merry Christmas everyone!

Thank you Mr. Birk. It really will be great. Glad you had/have patience with this project. This might be the borough's Christmas present :)
