in other news "gone" may be the UNWANTED answer...the boro and LASA have been meeting in regards to the sale of the wastewater treatment plant. read Councillor Kelly Murphy stated in an article in Lancaster Online last week that some news would be ready in 2 or 3 weeks.... However, in the meantime.....
1) remember once the boro sells the sewer plant it can NEVER EVER get it back.
2) the sewer plant is the ONLY moneymaker in this boro
3) go to LASA's website..the MINIMUM SEWER BILL IS 81.99 FOR 3 MONTHS THE BORO'S IS 58.32 and this was months ago. this WILL cost each and every homeowner, taxpayer and resident of this boro a LOT more money BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY ALL CONTROL and the loss of a VALUABLE piece of land!
do NOT allow the boro to sell our sewer plant. it will be one of the most horrendous CURSED unfixable decisions EVER made in this boro and will haunt our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for years and years and years.
***AT THE VERY VERY LEAST THIS QUESTION SHOULD BE ON THE BALLET. ***
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS THE RESIDENTS WILL FACE THAT WILL AFFECT OUR WAY OF LIFE FOR EVER. IT' SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN LIGHTLY.
(I have NO respect for any of our elected officials ....all a bunch of puppets who can't/won't think or speak for themselves... how dare you call yourself a "true Columbian" NOT ONE WILL STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND SAY HELL NO.
WE - the working for a living, taxpaying homeowners are THE BACKBONE of this boro. it's ALL about CONTROL. always was. always will be. get smart.

Only the accounts that can meet the minimum currently benefit. Once you go past the minimum you pay more in Columbia.
The only accounts that can meet the minimum would be single person accounts or couples who are very cognizant of their water usage.
Look at other small municipalities in Pa. who just recently just upgraded their sewer plants. After the upgrade the added costs forced them all to increase their costs dramatically, some have had to double their rates. Even after all that they have to hope there's no more enviromental laws passed in the future that may force more upgrades.
So lets not get caught up in the minimum payers for the majority of the customers.

Let me tell you what LASA and Manor Township shoved down the throats of 220 households. They forced sewer on our community with each home having to take a $13,000 lien on our properties in 2009. This plan was lied to us on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, but it was in fact a tract of land for a 300+ townhouse development. Today, LASA is still a bad word in our development and keeps a low profile as of today.
Now to the Columbia plan, as a public utility, they may take the lowest bid offered to do projects. Columbia will have to flip the $10M to run a pipeline to our area on Anchor Road that will cross over 50+ waterways that could do more harm then good. This plant in Columbia is a money maker that pays for more then four salaries of upper management. Regardless of future upgrades to the plant, you do not have an easy installment plant for ten to fifteen years like us ranging from $100 to $150 a quarter.
So please do not take this lightly, we were treated poorly with having to hire lawyers to defend this injustice.
Say no to LASA!

has anyone done the homework? what percentage ARE minimum usage? did anyone take into account ALL the elderly high rises, assisted living, cottages, etc, nursing home, 3 state funded homes, etc??? THAT has to be a big chunk!! I have a family of 4, we are typical water users, each of us shower 1 time a day, i do 2 loads of wash 3 days a week mostly (6 loads regularly) more during winter months. i do not have a dishwasher, i do have teenagers who like to take longer showers....my sewer bill each month is 24.64 . that my firend is a bargain! Less than 75 dollars for 3 months! AND the boro WOULD own and maintain and control t5he sewer plant. that's the biggest plus and the BIGGEST INVESTMENT THIS BORO COULD MAKE!

thank you to the comment about LASA and Manor Township. Some people don't get it. I believe the Boro already has everything in place, they had submitted and acquired the required documents to upgrade and or build a new plant...this was all done the past couple years...if you follow up and read or attend the PUBLIC municipal authority mtgs. you will know this for FACT. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
i also disapprove of the manner in which they try to shove the Chesapeake Bay Watershed" down our throats. What the hell? WHAT ABOUT ALL THE BUSINESSES, FACTORIES, ETC THAT RELEASE ??????? IN TO THE RIVER DAILY? WHAT ABOUT ALL THE FARMS THAT LINE THE RIVER FOR THE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM UPSTATE and all that manure???? I truly wish people would wise up BEFORE its too late. this is a prime examply of what NOT to let happen in this small boro....it will be the beginning of the end. and we all know how that will turn out. the rental properties (hundreds and hundreds of them can NOT pick up the slack and keep this boro breathing.)

Taxpayers in the boro want to know why their taxes are so much higher than their surrounding municipalities, its because of this thinking. Columbia needs its own school, its own police force its own sewer co.. Meanwhile our surrounding communities share school districts, police forces, & sewer co. That's how they keep their taxes lower & their services superior to Columbia. This all relatrs to homeowners living there & slumlords owning Columbia
Ask the former boro mgr. Now in charge of West Hemp., no wsy would they want their own sewer plant. The costs to the township & its residents would be too much. But as usual the ones running Columbia know better than them. That's why Columbis is in the condition its in.
