Vietnam vet wants Columbia to hang banners honoring veterans

Bob Smith proposed installing pole banners (similar to the ones shown above) to honor Columbia's military veterans.

At the June 7, 2022 Columbia Borough Council Work Session, resident and Vietnam veteran Bob Smith proposed that the borough hang banners throughout town to honor Columbians who have served in the military. Each banner would hold a photo and the name of a veteran, similar to what other municipalities have done.

Smith told Columbia Spy that the project could help attract people to the downtown. He has reached out to the VFW and is also working on creating a bank account for donations. Smith asked council if borough employees could install the banners. More information will follow as it becomes available.

The project be discussed further and voted on during the June 28, 2022 council meeting.

Whatever happened to the trolley?

Whatever happened to Columbia's trolley? Sure, we know it was sold at auction on May 13, 2022 for $21,100 - but then what? Well, according to the May 2022 Public Works Department Report, the trolley went all the way to Kyle, Texas where it will become - of all things - an ice cream truck. Surely, Columbians will want to wish the trolley well on its new, and hopefully profitable, endeavor.

Columbia Borough initially purchased the trolley in early 2017 at a price of $39,900, after council voted for the purchase in December 2016. It was considered an investment at the time but lost money over the course and a few years due to operating costs and lack of ridership.

The debris that collected near River Park was cleaned up on Wednesday.

It's what remains of a project that Columbia Spy reported on HERE.

This fence was then installed at the cul-de-sac.
