Judge approves petition for Highspire to switch school districts

Why doesn't Columbia do this?

A judge in Harrisburg has approved a petition signed by more than half of Highspire residents who want to switch school districts. "We got over 55 percent of the taxpayers to sign a petition requesting that this matter go to the Department of Education, and that they review it based on educational merit," said the Highspire Education Coalition's lawyer David Deluce.

At this point there's no way Cola school officials can save the school. Theres not enough rainy day funds to pay the bills in next years budget. They have to come up with even more money this coming year to contribute to the pension fund. They couldnt make the budget work with the highest tax increase in the county. They still had to pull over half there reserves.Would deffinitely be better for Cola taxpayers to have the state take over the school. Than the hard decisions would be made that our current leaders can't make.

The mayor is always looking to get attention, here's something that will get you attention & a lot of support from the majority of Cola citizens. If you would get out in your community & get petitions signed, this would truly help turn your town around. This school tax is the biggest reason we can't get Cola turned around. Do the hard & right thing for your town mayor. There will be plenty of volunteers to get those signatures for you.

East Donegal man charged in Columbia hit & run

NATHAN WILLISON | LNP Staff Writer An East Donegal Township man is facing criminal charges after police say he struck a 13-year-old with his truck and fled the scene last month.  Derek Scott Mohr, 28, is charged with causing an accident involving death or injury without a license, failing to stop to render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and related charges.  Mohr had been driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado through Chestnut Street in Columbia around 8 p.m. March 20 when he struck a 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter and continued driving, according to charging documents filed by police.  When police arrived, they found the boy with a broken leg and a cut to his forehead.   GUEST COMMENTARY [Name withheld by request out of fear of retaliation] For two decades, Leo Lutz has occupied the mayor's office in Columbia, and his supporters are quick to credit him with every positive development in our borough, but leadership is a two-way street. If Mayor Lutz is going to accept praise for Columbia's successes, many of which, frankly, he had little direct involvement in, then he must also be held accountable for our failures. The facts paint a troubling picture. Despite the mayor's repeated assurances that our streets are safe, we've witnessed a disturbing rise in assaults, shootings, and vandalism.
