Today's early morning fire left four structures condemned: 519, 521, 523, and 525 Locust Street. 521 fell victim to a previous fire on May 2, 2019. Firefighters were on scene during the overnight hours.

At the 30th Annual Arbor Day Celebration at Janson's Park:

Rick Hartlieb of the DCNR Bureau of Forestry and Amy Evans, chair of the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission displayed a banner commemorating Columbia's 30th year as a Tree City USA.

A tree was planted in memory of Ed Wickenheiser.

Morgan Bigler recited Joyce Kilmer's poem, "Trees"

Bill Kloidt presented an award to Dr. Claire Storm.

What looks like a fire truck inside a building is really just a reflection in the window of the former Prudhommes at 5th & Cherry.

This statue of the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva features a small seated Buddha in the headdress.

And there he is. The statue is at the Buddhist Temple, 2nd & Cherry.

Much like a full-body tattoo, graffiti covers the entire side of this passing boxcar.

This debris is beginning to look like cirrhosis of the river.

The Columbia Historic Preservation Society in partnership with Columbia Borough has acquired the stewardship of this historic landmark, with the intent to preserve and promote those forgotten folks who played such a significant role in shaping the history of Columbia. Long term plans for this site include, turning it into a memorial park so future generations may come here to ponder and understand the great sacrifices made by those brave souls resting here.

Council voted 4-3 last week to support a PSAB resolution supporting the legalization of cannabis.

521 Locust Street burns - again

 

 Shortly after midnight on Sunday, firefighters from several departments responded to a fire at 521 Locust Street.  The same house caught fire on May 2, 2019, as Columbia Spy reported HERE.  

In January 2020, Columbia Borough Council voted for the Lancaster County Land Bank to acquire the property, which was recently renovated.
