Old Columbia dam that blocked shad helped create Fish & Boat Commission, celebrating its 150th year


The Columbia dam was described as "long the target of curses and condemnations" in the book, "American Shad in the Susquehanna River Basin: A 300-Year History."  

Teresa Allen named interim market manager


Teresa Allen, a former market standholder and vendor representative, is now the interim manager of the Columbia Market House, sources have confirmed to Columbia Spy. Beth Troxell resigned last week as market manager.

This is the route to the trail

The map shown above might alleviate current confusion about the route to the Northwest River Trail. The trail requires walkers and bikers to leave Columbia River Park and travel north along North Front Street to the intersection with the new Route 441 bypass (and then onto the trail). Travelers should exercise caution when crossing at this intersection.

State trooper says Cortney Fry killer Micah Stewart likely hanged himself in prison cell


Micah Stewart, who was serving a life sentence for the 2004 slaying of his 19-year-old girlfriend, Cortney Fry, likely hanged himself at Graterford state prison, police said Monday.

Stewart, 30, was found dead in his cell March 9.

Details: 
On 03-20-16 at 11:54 AM the Columbia Police were called to an address in the 400 blk. of N. 3rd for a burglary in progress. It was reported that the homeowner came home from vacation to find a person, later identified as Zachary Jock, in his house and detained him until police arrived.

Officers arrived a short time later and took Jock into custody. It was determined that Jock had been in the house at least two (2) days and was wearing clothing that belonged to the homeowner and his girlfriend when taken into custody. Jock also had a backpack on him that contained several items from the homeowner as well as his child. Jock ate food that the victims had bought prior to going on vacation and was sleeping on the first floor of the house.

The homeowner stated that numerous furniture items were moved around the house, most of the clothing that was in drawers and in the laundry room had been moved as well as food had been used and two (2) knives were thrown into the ceiling of the first floor. Numerous items were missing from the house and are valued at approx. $2,800.00. Several items in the house were damaged including damage to a door and window. Damage was estimated at approx. $1,075.00. The victims also found pills, alcohol and cigarettes that did not belong to them in the house.

Jock was taken to central arraignment after being charged with one felony count of Burglary, a felony count of Theft, a misdemeanor charge of Criminal Mischief and two (2) misdemeanor counts of Prohibited Acts. If anyone has any other information they are asked to contact the Columbia Borough Police Department.
