Columbia man charged with raping and killing girl, raping mother, to be tried in Lancaster County court

Jason Shackelford

The Columbia man accused of raping and killing a 12-year-old girl and then raping her mother last month will have his charges decided in Lancaster County Court.

Jason Shackelford, 39, plans to waive his preliminary hearing, scheduled for Thursday before Columbia District Judge Miles Bixler, according to the judge's office.

At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors must present sufficient evidence that a crime was committed and that the defendant probably is responsible and, therefore, that a jury or judge should hear the case in county court. Defendants frequently waive the hearing and allow the charges to proceed to court.

Lancaster Catholic crunches 49-34 Columbia for District 3 Class 3A championship, ties mark with 20 crowns

"We weren't here to get silver," Columbia coach Karl Kreiser said, "we were here to get gold. So it's disappointing, and it will be disappointing for a while. But we'll get over it and we'll move on. Give them credit. They played better than us tonight. Who knows? Maybe we'll get them down the road."
