A one-vehicle accident on the Veterans Memorial Bridge slowed traffic for about half an hour this morning. The vehicle, which apparently collided with a section of the bridge, sustained severe front-end damage, but no significant injuries were reported. The accident occurred on the Columbia end of the bridge, just above the railroad tracks, and was called in at 10:51 a.m. A nearby pedestrian reported hearing a loud bang followed by tires screeching and then a second bang. Several units responded, as listed below, and Columbia Borough workers helped direct traffic until the scene was cleared.

Born and raised in Columbia, Barry Ford was a constant presence in the borough.
Ford spent his career reporting on the town for the former daily Columbia News and then the weekly Columbia Ledger, where he spent 18 years and was the editor when it folded in 2009.
If he wasn't covering a sporting event for the Columbia newspapers, or for LNP where he was a longtime corespondent, Ford might have been keeping score or helping organize the contests as part of the Columbia Boys Athletic Association, where he was a longtime member.

A Columbia man that was charged with having 65 bags of fentanyl was sentenced to 5 to 10 years in prison after trying to sneak three more bags of the drug into Lancaster County Prison earlier this year.
Derreck Strausbaugh, 29, tried to sneak three bags of fentanyl into the county's prison after being arrested on a warrant on March 24, according to the district attorney's office.

THEFT OF ARTWORK - 900 BLOCK OF PLANE STREET | Columbia Borough Police Department
On 7/19/19 at approximately 8:10 pm the Columbia Borough Police Department was dispatched to the Wagon Werks Apartments in the 900 Block of Plane Street for the theft of a framed 4ft by 3ft pen and ink drawing of Mt. McKinley. The resident left the piece of artwork in the hallway unattended for a short time but when he got back it was missing.
