Police call at 855 Chestnut

Columbia Borough and West Hempfield police responded to a call this morning at about 9:30 regarding an open door at 855 Chestnut Street.  The property is the former Long's Funeral Home and has been vacant for several years.

    1. Why do local people want to see this home torn down so badly? I've had an eye on it for a couple of weeks now as I'm in the market for a project home that is preferably historic. I spoke with a few "locals" and they all seem rather upset about this property? Some got a little hostile even! I don't understand why the anger and hatred of a big old house that needs some fixing up? The PA folk seem like a funny people in that they are very polarized on preservation of their heritage or anxious to demolish and erase it all outright. Why not just level all of Columbia and start over from scratch then? Some nice new cookie cutter McMansions along the Susquehanna would be so much more beautiful right?

  3. NEVER tear down part of Columbia's history.
    Value what is here, treasure and keep it. While I do not believe in ghosts, I really hope it was one :)

  4. Speaking of Columbia history, how about the land down on front street, that the borough sold for peanuts. then the buyer just sold it this week for 200 hundred thousand dollars!! The BIG BOYS are here to stay!!!

I think that it may have been a beautiful three way acquisition deal with partners Sam Bigler, Jeff Siebert, and Jeff Mohler buying the property more less under the radar when Teddy Ryan was in charge of the advertising for public offerings. Good for them that they had a realtor that knew how to pull the right strings ! ( but maybe not so good for the taxpayers : - (

      I guess everyone involved figured that the benefits of the big project will make up for the hundreds of thousands of land value dollars (if not millions ) that the Borough left on the table when they sold the land.

      Did you ever figure out how many acres of Commercially or Residentially Zoned Susquehanna river front land actually exists in Lancaster County ? Outside of Columbia, maybe none !! That land is GOLD
