An LGBTQ+ rights group and a local member of the parental rights group Moms for Liberty plan to hold gatherings on Saturday outside the Lancaster Public Library after obtaining permits from the city.
The dueling rallies are over a "Drag Queen Story Hour" event for children scheduled at the library that afternoon. Interest in the event has surged after Republican county commissioners criticized it. So has opposition, with about 400 signatures on an online petition that calls on the library to cancel the event.
Local LGBTQ+ group Lancaster Pride obtained an event permit for Ewell Plaza, which is directly outside the library, according to Lancaster City spokeswoman Amber Strazzo Righter. The group hopes to provide a "peaceful, loving, supportive presence" separating protesters from families going to the library, it said online.
A separate permit was granted to Lucy Gillichbauer, a member of Lancaster County's Moms for Liberty chapter, for a gathering at Binns Park, across North Queen Street from Ewell Plaza, Strazzo Righter said.
