Drivers urged to use caution as bridge goes dark in Columbia, millions of mayflies emerge
The bridge blackout is scheduled to begin tonight, and it could continue for weeks as mayflies complete their annual mating ritual in the skies above Veterans Memorial Bridge, which carries Route 462 over the Susquehanna River to link Lancaster and York counties.
That's according to Jake Graham, Columbia Borough's public works manager, who said the bugs' mating season kicked off sometime overnight. He said he knows because thousands of the dead flies were found beneath the bridge's lanterns this morning.
"The worst of it was on the Wrightsville side, which is typical," Graham said, adding that road crew workers used tools to remove them.

The bridge inspectors were on our end this morning.
So, they might be "wrapping it up" soon.

This yard sale sign has been down at the bridge plaza for at least a week. When the first commemorative bricks honoring veterans were installed there a few years ago, council said no signs would be permitted in this place of honor.

The fire company was dispatched to the 400 block of Locust this morning for a brush fire which turned out to be smoking mulch at the base of a parking meter post.
A little later, fire personnel responded to a report of a fire at an apartment on Bethel Street.
