What I Saw - March 2, 2014

Someone recently wiped out this NO PARKING sign on the Barber Street side of the Columbia Plaza.
Note the tire marks under the signpost and the broken pole (left side of the photo).

Another view of the same.  It was only a matter of time before it got knocked over, as it had been leaning for several years, attached to its base by a single bolt.

 As this one is.

Flocks of snow geese flew over this morning,
That means spring can't be far behind, despite the impending snow.

Near 6th and 462: still not completely cleared, after all this time.
No worries, the coming snow will cover it up (thus making it even more dangerous).

 Another winter casualty (along 462)

Let's hope everyone is all right.

This part of the 200 block of Locust is a "minefield."
(So is the 100 block of Walnut on the right side, going towards River Park. Also, parts of 2nd Street are a dog poop disaster.  This morning, I saw a group of people letting their dog run and crap along 2nd, next to Avenue H, as they watched from the porch.)

  1. After reading this, I went out to see for myself and right you are, it is a minefield. I quickly counted over 20 separate piles of poop spanning half a block. I'm certain that someone has to see this going on, that many piles and no one ever sees it happening. There is a "camera" in this very area. There must be fines given to those that do not clean up after their dogs and maybe it will curb the problem. This area is highly visible to tourists. It's like having company over and not cleaning prior to their arrival. One would not leave feces on their living room floor, it should not be on Columbia's living room floor either.

    1. It doesn't make a very good impression and can spread disease. There was a Parvo problem on Perry Street a while back. It's incredible how some people can let their dogs crap on the sidewalk where others walk.

  2. We don't enforce dog poop logs here in Columbia. I don't think anyone has ever been given a fine, therefor the laws are meaningless. They might as well just put up signs saying that poop is allowed anywhere. Until they give out the first poop fine ( in history ),, the law is a big joke.

  3. agreed. as usual the codes dept is NOT doing its job! dog poop is a SERIOUS problem & a great health concern....there are cameras on every corner....WHY in the heck do they not prosecute the dogs owners?????? heck EVERY code officer (3), the meter people, the police ALL should be giving out tickets for dog poop. 24/7. oh and for those of you who live OUT of town, please take a walk downtown & see for yourself. this is again totally unacceptable.

  7. Trash is worse then dog poop. Dog poop is a natural occurrence and bio degradable. Non the less, it is true that both Meter People, Code People and Police should be and can be giving out fines for dog poop. It is also true that they should all be giving out fines for trash ( littering ) For example. walk down the alley beside Stover's on any given day. Or, just sit in your car at Stover's and watch people littering down the alley. Why can't either the Police, The Meter People, or the Code People give out EVEN JUST ONE FINE FOR LITTERING, so that the words gets out on the Street that Columbia actually does have some PRIDE !, or don't we ??

    1. I agree. A few fines, and the word would get out.

  8. i agree 100%...they should have already been doing this. Boro mgmt does NOT care about its residents. they need to make their own accountable. especially the code dept. what a joke!
