Some shots around town from the past week . . .
Question - and answer (or not)
As the crow flies . . . or sits?
This is not how to dispose of a monitor.
Walking the line
Strolling players
No trespassing . . . at a cemetery?
Lawn furniture - and what a lawn!
Front porch - and there's another one of those pesky phone books!
Whatever
It's a fast car - says so right there.
It gets groceries, too (very fast, I assume).
Lotsa flags
thanks for the great pics!!!!
ReplyDeleteit's a shame that the code dept STILL has blinders on....get out there and walk the beat (along with the police)...make yourselves visible...talk to people...educate people...some don't have a clue-really.
regardless, DO the job we are paying you all for. i for one of many am SICK of looking at peoples trash and rubbish and even more sick SMELLING some of these peoples homes and yards-oh yeah-the dog waste IS ridiculous..where are the cameras Norm???? there is dog shit on the sidewalks ALL over the downtown area DAILY. the codes and police should be giving out instant citations like crazy.
Yes, where are the citations?
DeleteWHAT A JOKE.....CODES DEPT. WOW. SOMEONE NEEDS TO TAKE OVER, STEP UP, GET THINGS UNDER CONTROL. AND GO AFTER THESE CHRONIC VIOLATORS. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF LIVING NEXT DOOR TO A STINKING, FILTHY, YARD FULL OF DOG WASTE, RUBBISH EVERYWHERE, WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT. IT NEVER STOPS. BEEN LIKE THAT FOR YEARS. AND THIS IS NOT A RENTAL.
ReplyDeleteWHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU LIVED NEXT DOOR TO SOMEONE LIKE THIS??????
BET YOU'D UNDERSTAND THEN.
Take pictures and go to a council meeting, shoe the councilors them submit them to the press. Don't wait for council to correct it, it should have already been corrected by the codes department. I'm tired of our tax dollars paying employees to have unheard of insurance benefits, ridiculously low premiums and a cozy pension. ALL while not doing the job they are generously compensated for.
DeleteI agree. Some of our officials are not doing their jobs.
Deletei agree. it seems like certain people in this boro do and have gotten away with things......it seems to me that these chronic issues MUST be dealt with. i do NOT understand where mgmt doesn't have a problem with how things are being done. or NOT done
ReplyDeleteYes, some do get away with things - at all levels.
DeleteI am personally amazed at the sheer lack of common decency we seem to have in this town, some of which is clearly reflected in the above pictures. There are scenes like this all over our town.
ReplyDeleteI cannot get over the litter. Young children just throw their trash down wherever they are. Our preteen children run through yards, rip up flowers or lawn ornaments, kick in fences, and walk in front of traffic. Their language leaves much to be desired.
What is there to be done? Are the above pictures a direct reflection on the decline of town?
Those are valid points. Sad to say, the town IS in decline. Not to sound defeatist, but it may already be too late to fix things.
Deletein ref to the pic "whatever" about the dogs...who do they think they are kidding? if they have to advertise, we ALL know they do not have a clue. and i would imagine some group would agree with me. like the spca, orca, humane league, etc.
ReplyDeletei think we should put the owner s in a cage on the front lawn with a sign around their necks....saying "yes we know what we are doing!" what idiots!
i agree Cole. NOONE LISTENS. IT'S TIME TO TAKE BACK OUR TOWN - BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE (IT MAY ALREADY BE). WE TAXPAYERS MUST TELL OUR OFFICIALS HOW AND WHAT TO DO. WE MUST ENCOURAGE OR FIND A WAY TO GET 75 % OF THE RENTAL PROPS BACK AS SINGLE OWNER OCCUPIED HOMES - THE BORO MUST MAKE IT WORTH THELANDLORDS WILE, GIVE THEM INCENTIVES. GIVE THEM TAX BREAKS. HELLO. WAKE UP. WE ARE SOON A GHOST TOWN.....ITS THAT SIMPLE. STICK TOGETHER. ATTEND MTGS. SPEAK UP. WE NEED TO INSIST THAT CITATIONS ARE ISSUED. THAT LAWS ARE ENFORCED. THE POLICE NEED TO STEP IT UP TOO....GIVE CITATIONS TO THESE PUNKS WHO WAK AROUND WITH THEIR ASSES OUT AND THEIR PANTS DOWN TO THEIR KNEES. GIVE CITATIONS TO DOGS SHITTING ON OUR SIDEWALKS. GIVE CITATIONS TO MY NEIGHBORS DOGS AND MY FRIENDS NEIGHBOR AND MY COUSIN, ETC...THIS IS ALL OVER TOWN....WHY ISN'T IT ENFORCED?????THAT BARK INCESSANTLY EVERY DAY FROM 8 AM TIL 11 PM. I CAN NOT TAKE ANYMORE. LET THEM KNOW WE ARE NOT STANDING FOR IT. WE OWN OUR TOWN. WE NEED TO UNITE. WE NEED TO INSIST ON ACCOUNTABILITY. OR YOUR GONE. YOUR DONE.
ReplyDeletewow. i have to say i really do agree with a lot of that, even thou you can tell the writer has had it with their neighbors....must be classy ones. but i DO understand. these transient tenants do NOT take pride in anything with their props...only their i phones, etc. and they have NO respect for anyone-the elderly, the sick, the handicapped, the mothers with babies.....they just don't care.
ReplyDeletewe need to find a way to STOP these transients from even coming into this boro. advertise for them to take the bus in lancaster to deleware or something.
oh how i miss the good ole days...when we knew everyone in town. we werent angels or perfect...but we didn't hurt anybody ! we always respected our elders...shoveled for them because we WANTED to. helped them carry in their groceries....all because we WERE RAISED RIGHT!!! WITH LOVE AND RESPECT AND COMMON SENSE AND DECENCY.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I live right up the street from where the lawn furniture pic was taken- it is the same renter that has the sorry looking American flags that he is so proud of. This has been like this for years- since they moved in. And nothing is said. But when i called about the next door which was empty at the time, and hadnt had the grass cut for about 6 months- the code enforcer came to MY door the next week with a notice that I needed a new porch roof and I had 30 days to comply. We knew this and had been planning on replacing it but this is what happens when you call about something. You are the one in the hot seat. I am concerned about the "Whatever" caption and where it was taken at- what were the conditions of the animals? Is there something that should be done here???
ReplyDeleteSounds like codes are enforced arbitrarily - and vindictively.
DeleteThe sign is at 9th Street and 462. I don't know the back story.
i do agree that we have serious issues and problems in the Boro. First and foremost we need mgmt, council and school board memebers who actually care about this town adn would like to see it back in its glory. sorry, it won;t ever happen. there are way way way too many rental properties in the boro and NOT enough homeowners.....how hard is it to figure that out?????
ReplyDeletesadly i think its too late for the boro to make a comeback. its way too late. the taxpayers just simpkly can NOT sustain all the bs, all the exorbitant spending, the taxes, the replacement of how many principals in the school district.....i love the old Columbia. I miss those days. I am moving out TOO. i just can NOT continue to live here anymore. i can NOT afford it. I can NOT afford the taxes. and NO ONE LISTENS. NO ONE CARES. NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. DON'T SAY YOU ALL HAVEN'T BEEN TOLD. YOU ALL JUST CHOOSE NOT TO LISTEN. I LOVED HERE ALL MY LIFE, 60 PLUS YEARS.
its in plain view on Lancaster Avenue across from the closed Turkey Hill.....I think something should be done. But what? I wonder if the police were already there that they put that note out front? Looks real attractive coming into town. NOT. they should have to remove it. agian. bet they are not Columbians. because they do NOT care.
ReplyDeleteand yes. the codes dept is a J O K E .......and so is Boro Council because guess what ? THEY ARE CODES DEPT MGMT. guess they don't have a problem with the way the dept is run. again. blinders.
The sign is an eyesore. You're right - it's gotta look bad to people passing through.
DeleteCode enforcement is lousy and inconsistent.
you know its pretty sad that the codes dept is such a joke. we pay their wages. the boro should PRAISE ALL homeowners JUST for being able to continue to afford to live in the Boro. and guess what-if we can afford to live in the boro we can NOT afford to repair our properties...taxes are too high.....
ReplyDeleteagain. someone got their priorities mixed up. something is quite wrong with this picture when you as a taxpaying homeowner calls about the stench and junk next door and when the codes guy comes out-its you that he gives a notice to. what the hell is that?
CODES DEPT SHOULD FOCUS ON ALL THE RENTAL PROPERTIES THAT ARE NOT UP TO SNUFF....THAT SHOULD TAKE YOU ABOUT 5 YEARS. they are everywhere. make the landlords AND the tenants ACCOUNTABLE.
Landlords...you need to step up to the plate....check on your tenants and your properties.
make them keep the property clean and nice...make them or get rid of them how hard is it?
agreed. and it continues. week after week and month after month. we need to start complaining to our elected officials-aka councilpersons and tell them "we have had enough"
ReplyDeleteyes it does look bad and it reflects on US. also i think that codes SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON THE DOWNTOWN.....THEY ARE TRYING TO REVITALIZE THE DOWNTOWN AND LOOK AT THE SLUMLORDS PROPERTIES ON THE 100 AND 200 BLOCKS OF LOCUST ST.....THEY CAN NOT BE IN COMPLIANCE.
ReplyDeleteyeah ok. people want to invest $$$$$$ in the downtown to look at dog shit, trash, half dressed people hanging out 24 - 7 on the front porch or steps and listen to them curse. wake the heck up. council you need to take a walk up and down Locust St and OPEN your eyes.
good thinking. true. thats all we hear...boro is trying to revitalize the downtown...BUT not on eof em is smart enough to think that way. heck the rentals on the 100 200 300 AND 400 blocks of Locust St need some code dept attention....most of em look pretty rough.
ReplyDeleteand what is the boro doing to KEEP the businesses in town????? the printing co on 300 bk Locust st closed up shop and left. WHY ??????????
i have read some really good comments on here. a lot of good suggestions. now if only someone would come up with a plan to benefit ALL taxpaying homeowners.....i agree the Boro MUST find a way to tax renters.....MUST increase our land locked tax base......put on your thinking caps people...............maybe thats the way to turn homes back into single family owned homes.
ReplyDeleteREVITALIZATION DOWNTOWN WILL NOT WORK IF YOU MGMT AND SCHOOL BOARD CAN NOT FIND A WAY TO MAKE IT MORE AFFORDABLE TO LIVE HERE - OIUR TAXES ARE THE HIGHEST IN THE COUNTY ONLY NEXT TO THE CITY! AND WE CAN NOT AFFORD IT.
ReplyDeleteITS A SHAME YOU S ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK DOWNTOWN I THINK....BUT THE HOMEOWNERS CAN NOT CONTINUE TO CARRY THIS ENTIRE BORO ANY MORE.
