Columbia Borough could see approval soon of a major addition to River Front Park, but officials say they need time to amend funding requests to close about a half-million dollar gap.
The lowest bid for the project came in at $2 million, but it was expected to cost $1.4 million, officials revealed Monday. Officials said they have 120 days to act on the bid.
With plans in jeopardy to build the visitor hub including bathrooms and increased parking along the Susquehanna River, half a dozen members of the River Park focus group urged borough council Monday to move forward with construction.

i am one of the many who think this is crazy! stop! $2 million for a hub??? the ONLY thing the River Park REALLY needs now is RESTROOMS (even portapots would do) THATS IT. NO MORE. THE GRAVY TRAIN NEEDS TO STOP......how much of all this money is matching grants-that the taxpayers have to pay? why do they ALWAYS forget to tell us this part?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Who will clean these bathrooms? Who will pay to have the bathrooms cleaned and the area to have increased security? I would bet good money that within a month of opening the new "hub" has graffiti and people doing drugs in it.
ReplyDeletePorta pots would be more than sufficient. If it's such a draw for the entire county then the entire county needs to contribute funding.
I agree 100% we need more done in Columbia than parks streets are terrible some like washboards
ReplyDeleteamen...most streets are soooo bad. do something important. create a tax for ALL renters between the ages of 21 and 50..so they can pay thier OWN childrens share towards a education (school taxes)....do something about the SLUM lords....do everything in your power to make em shape up or sell their props (use the ordinances already on the books) place recycle containers downtown for glass, aluminum and plastic...create home decorating contests monthly-have people take an interest in their homes again. encourage people to turn on their outside lights in the evening now that its nice (for all the people who love to walk!)...find alternate uses for the market house....the ghost tour was ONE OF THE BEST THINGS IN THE BORO...ACT ON IT!!! sorry the lights on Locust st fall short-not bright enough!
ReplyDeleteLETS GET THE PORTA POTS AT THE RIVER PARK AND BE DONE WITH IT....WE DON'T NEED TO SPEND $2 MILLION ON A HUB.....SPEND IT ON KEEPING OUR SEWER PLANT..NOW THATS AN AWESOME IDEA, WE DON'T WANT TO SELL IT TO LASA OR NOONE ELSE..
i got an idea. instead of spending $2 million more dollars on a building at River PArk...use your brains and spend it on A NEW OR UPGRADED SEWER PLANT!!!!!!!! now that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI Think we need more then 2 million dollars, say about 5 million! Lets do this river park right!! If we build it people will come. :O)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sick of the personal agendas on council!
ReplyDeleteyep.thats EXACTLY what it is.....a new or upgraded sewer plant would ALSO be my PRIORITY...it just does NOT make sense to NOT own it....it will NOT be cheaper to go with LASA. it's been proven
ReplyDeleteI would like to thank marry w. and her husband just to name a few, for their river park push! I live out of town and enjoy coming to columbia to put my boat in the river. I live in a 187 thousand dollar home and my taxes are just about the cost of a 85 thousand dollar home in your high taxed town.Thank god i dont have to travel the streets day in and day out, with all the bumps and cracked streets. Marry w. and her husband are you reading this, i hope so. Put 2 million dollars up of your own and make yourself proud!! And start cleaning the trash up down there marry!!
ReplyDeleteI THINK IT'S TIME FOR PEOPLE TO SAY "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE". Who decided that we need to spend all this money on the river park? They dont have any thing down there to provide shade and they want to build bathrooms. Seriously? The lower half of Plane Street has needed to be repaved since they put in new sewer lines about 10 years ago and they keep saying it is on "next years" list. Right- and I believe in the tooth fairy also. We are going to lose out with the Sewer Plant if we dont keep it under our ownership and they are worried about getting more places to park for the River Park-do they use up all the parking in the other lot they built?? I cant believe this. What can be done to halt this before its a done deal?????
ReplyDeleteI also live out of town. Thank god i dont live in columbia, but i do use the riverpark. I drive thru and thats it. There is nothing in that town that i need to stop and buy! I herd this doolittle guy owes alot of back taxes and he keeps buying property up! 15 full time cops, streets that should be put back to dirt roads just to name afue! People that leed must go back to see what the town NEEDS! Lowering taxes, stop section 8's, reducing the PAYROLL OF THE BOROUGH!!! The river is not going anywhere. When the time is right when you have a sur-plus in money, then finish the riverpark.
ReplyDeleteexcellant points the last 2 remarks!!! but if u want to brag u own a $187,000.00 home...schmuck, and u like to put ur boat in at columbia, do u spend any money in our boro??? probly not. why don't u put up the $2 mil to finish
ReplyDeleteWE NEED TO GO TO COUNCIL MTGS OR TALK TO COUNCIL PERSONS, CALL THEM EVEN AND TELL THEM NO NO NO....IT MUST STOP...NO MORE RIVER PARK NOTHING. RESTROOMS AND THATS IT. ATTEND BORO COUNCIL MTGS TOO....GLAD SOMEONE ELSE UNDERSTANDS.
ReplyDeleteyou know what thank God i don't live in Columbia....then why use our facilities??? you badmouth Columbia yet you drive around in it. wow. really. go home.
ReplyDeleteYAY!!!!! maybe some of the taxpayers in this Boro are finally waking up and coming out of thier slumber!!!!! Yes its time. Start THIS THURSDAY APRIL 25 AT 6:30 AND ATTEND JOINT MTG...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it'll be a real eye opener. Unfortunately it is NOT always whats best for this Boro...or even for the majority....but someONE persons own plan/decision/feelings,etc. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO NOT OWN OUR SEWER PLANT. IT WILL NOT BE CHEAPER WITH LASA...
....
I THANK YOU COLE FOR LETTING US EXPRESS OUR CONCERNS, OUR QUESTIONS, ETC
I think its good for the taxpaying citizens of this Boro to know whats really going on. Now its up to them to make a decision-do you care enough to attend this mtg ???????? you should.
