Columbia debates sewer plant options - LancasterOnline

Columbia residents have two choices when it comes to dealing with their aging wastewater treatment plant: refurbish the facility or relocate the sewage.

Two recently suggested designs simply upgrade the old plant, the first major improvement since 1972.

The second option, a proposed bulk services agreement from Lancaster Area Sewer Authority, abandons the old plant and instead builds a pump station and moves sewage to LASA for treatment.

  1. this is a NO BRAINER....UPGRADE THE OLD PLANT...AT LEAST WE'D OWN IT...sorry to say if u go with LASA, they won't tell u the whole truth again-4 yrs ago it was $ 6 MILLION just to hook up....that didn't include a pumping station, running lines, etc. so u need to ADD a couple more million-possibly 6 ....AND the Boro would still be respoinsible for all the sewer lines and the repairs. DUH? do i look that stupid. this is NOT hard to figure out. oh forgot to tell u, this is what i heard, the first thing to happen is ur sewer bill increasing from 20 a month to 55 A MONTH.

  2. um, didn't our sewer(wastewater) bills just exponentially increase? lived in Cola less than five years- only rate that has not changed or increased is Jack Gamby!

  4. I have relatives that live in different parts of Lancaster County and nobody pays as much as we do in Columbia for sewer. Please do your homework, Manheim Township and Manor Township are considerably less than Columbia.

  5. disagree....some LASA customers are on quarterly billing and its $75.00 which equals $25 per month.although thats old info, it could have gone up...after all they have even more to take care of..i vote NO TO LASA...its a no brainer.....
why on this green earth would you sell the only income revenue the Boro has???? STUPID..it don';t take no brain surgeon to figure this out.

  6. been here done that about 4 1/2 yrs ago! LASA tried to sneak in the back door...and some were actually for it. but the residents spoke up. LASA wanted $ 6 million JUST TO HOOK UP ! and that didn't include another $5 or $6 million to make it happen and do everything the boro would have needed to do AND LASA DIDN'T WANT THE LINES....THE BORO WOULD STILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THESE OLD LINES...EVEN TODAY, THAT HASEN'T CHANGED!!!!!

  7. just read in one of these articles that the cost is NOW $9.5 MILLION to hook up to LASA.....we can upgrade OUR OWN SEWER PLANT FOR THE SAME MONEY!!!and OWN IT...

  8. ALL LASA customers pay a MINIMUM of $25 a month. do some research.

  9. i have to weigh in here too....i agree that it would be in theBEST interest of the residents and taxpayers of theBoro to UPGRADE AND REBUILD OUR VERY OWN SEWER PLANT !!!!
It truly is a "no brainer" ...i will NEVER understand why ANYONE would encourage the Boro to go with LASA (unless of course it's for their OWN BENEFIT). We said NO 4 1/2 years ago-NOTHING has changed!
LASA GO AWAY WE ARE "NOT" INTERESTED
I really hope some taxpaying residnets attend the MEETING TODAY AT 4:30 PM AT THE BORO OFFICE...................it's important to attend
and yes the minimum LASA customeres pay now IS $25.00 a onth and they bill quarterly.
