Columbia officials talk fire radios, company consolidation

Discussion about the number of radios Columbia borough needs for their fire departments grew heated on June 23, when members of Columbia Consolidated Fire Department aired their opinions about both the necessary radio purchase and the proposed consolidation of the fire departments.

The borough is financially strapped. I guess we're still not understanding that.

I believe a good bit of this money has been sitting around for years actually. It was known the "new" radio system was coming and it was going to cost some money to change over. Money was put into an account that was just for the radios. I think the consolidation needs to happen, but the borough is also going to need to understand that with one fire department you will only have one fire department raising money. The state limits how many bingos can be held a week for a fire department and with consolidation there will be at least one less bingo a week to bring in money. It would also help if some citizens would also help out with the administrative part as well and let the firefighters worry about firefighting and training not raising money. Manheim Township just took over the administrative duties for Southern Manheim Township and Eden Fire companies. Most people don't know the time it takes to run a fire department correctly. In today's world everyone has less time to help out it seems and less people are willing to help out as well.

excellant points! it does make sense that the womans auxillry's would do the fundraising and let the firefighters to what they train hard for!! they should NOT have to constantly be running fundraisers....time to step it up people...remember this is a VOLUNTEER fire dept!!!! and a HUGE thank you to each and every firefighter in the Boro!
